IU Credit Union Education Initiative

Cardinal Stage’s focus is on nurturing a lifelong passion for theatre in audiences of all ages, cultures, and economic backgrounds by investing in the audiences of tomorrow and by increasing accesses to underserved populations. In partnership with IU Credit Union, Cardinal developed the Education Initiative in support of those goals.

The IUCU Education Initiative includes four elements:

  • Cardinal for Schools— This program significantly reduces the cost of admission so that school children can attend special weekday matinee performances. Cardinal fundraises the difference between what schools can afford and the cost of putting on a show. In addition, Cardinal produces educational materials to accompany performances, specifically designed to meet curricular standards for the age group.
  • Community Access Tickets (CATs)—Cardinal works with social service organizations and Title I schools to provide free tickets to children and families who cannot otherwise attend a Cardinal production. Cardinal anticipates bringing 600+ kids and family members to 2017–2018 shows absolutely free of charge.
  • School Tour—Cardinal recently commissioned a new S.T.E.M. focused play for grade-schoolers from multi-award winning playwright Glen Berger. Peabody: The Science Fair Affair ran in October 2015 at the Ivy Tech Waldron Arts Center before touring to dozens of schools in the counties around Bloomington, providing 10,000+ schoolchildren a rare if not first experience with live theatre. And thanks to a generous gift from Duke Energy along with support from Smithville Fiber, IU Credit Union, Gold Casters and other supporters, many schools saw the show for absolutely free.
  • Masterclasses—Cardinal offers courses in scene study, improv, fight choreography, speech, directing, and more to children and adults periodically. When available, information can be found here.

These outreach efforts could not be possible without the partnership and support of generous organizations and individuals who share Cardinal’s vision for a professional regional theatre as part of a stronger Bloomington community
