Support Education

From the beginning, Cardinal Stage has focused on children and education.  Our third show was A Year with Frog and Toad, which laid the groundwork for the highly successful Cardinal for Kids series.  A year later we began our brilliant relationship with IU’s Themester Initiative with Inherit the Wind.  Over the five years that Cardinal has been production shows with specific children and teen appeal – over 25,000 children have attended a professional quality live show like Go, Dog, Go! or To Kill a Mockingbird.  Thousands of those children have attended at greatly reduced prices and thousands more have attended at absolutely no cost whatsoever!  For these efforts, Cardinal was awarded the 2010 Chamber of Commerce Franklin Initiative Leading Light Award for Educational Outreach.

In a world in which arts funding is being slashed there is a greater-than-ever need for children of all backgrounds to be introduced to the arts and there is a special need for these children to experience live theatre!  Multiple studies from around the globe have shown that children who are exposed to live theatre score higher on tests in both arts and sciences.  Live theatre develops empathy and makes students better problem solvers.  And not surprising, since they are forced to put themselves in the shoes of others (think of the wisdom of Atticus Finch).  They are able to think in more sophisticated ways because they are immersing themselves in the subject rather than standing distant from the subject.  Theatre forces children to work through an issue from multiple points of view. Theatre rocks kids worlds.

And so as Cardinal approaches its 2013 -2014 season, the company is building on the success of past education and outreach efforts like the Community Access Ticket and the Cardinal for Schools programs – always keeping 2 specific objectives in mind:

  1. Expanding access for children of all backgrounds
  2. Adding value to the theatrical event by extending the experience back into the classroom and into the home with supplementary materials (and making sure those materials are keyed to the state’s curricular standards)

With those objectives in mind, Cardinal developed the Education Initiative.  Basically, the Initiative is a way of bringing together disparate education and outreach efforts to ensure that we are meeting our objectives in a comprehensive manner.

The Education Initiative is comprised of 5 unique activities:

  1. Cardinal for Schools – getting children to shows is still the backbone of what we do! Last year we met with MCCSC educators and discussed their needs and challenges – including what ticket price the schools could afford.  The number most felt was doable was around $6 per student.  We launched Cardinal for Schools with a goal of fundraising the difference between $6 and what it actually cost us to put on a show (the difference is usually about $10).  Our goal last year was to raise enough money to bring 3000 students across the season.  Well, by this season’s end we will have hosted 4000 students at Cardinal shows – a remarkable accomplishment – and the goal next year under the Cardinal Education Initiative is to raise enough money to bring 5000 Students to plays, including the season launching production of William Golding’s Lord of the Flies and the Cardinal for Kids series shows The Cat In The Hat and Pippi Longstocking.  And as part of the Cardinal for Schools program, we will also be producing extensive supplementary educational materials – but we’re doing so next year with direct input from educators in an effort to ensure that the materials are specifically geared to curricular standards and specifically useful in the classroom.
  2. Facilitators - Cardinal is working with the School of Education to offer teachers grad student facilitators who can come into the classroom to work with teachers and students on the text and the supplementary materials – providing additional insights into the plays and teasing out what is most useful in these materials for teachers and students.
  3. Community Access Tickets (or CATs) - The goal is to raise enough funds to bring 400-600 children from at-risk populations to shows at absolutely no charge to the children, families or schools.  We will work with partner organizations like Head Start and Stepping Stones to ensure that these tickets are going to families who could not otherwise attend a Cardinal show.
  4. School Tour – we are launching our first ever tour of a Cardinal show into the schools!  To launch the School Tour Series – we’ve chosen a terrific adaptation of Bill Bryson’s A Short History of Nearly Everything. The goal is to raise enough money to make this show affordable for all schools in throughout the South-Central Indiana Region.
  5. Advanced Actor Training Program  – Cardinal has been asked repeatedly by parents – and it was commented on repeatedly in our recent survey – why doesn’t Cardinal offer actor training programs? So at long last we are launching a program for the more experienced young actor.
